Biomedical Data Science Bootcamp, Part 1: Computing Environments (2017)

Prerequisites: None

This course will introduce participants with little or no prior experience to the computational environments and tools that will be assumed throughout the DeCART summer school. Students will learn how to work within Linux environments, use Git for software and data version control, create and run simple scripts within Jupyter notebooks,  and perform basic data manipulation with Python. Data and examples will be drawn from biology and health care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Students will be able to work within the Linux environment to execute programs, and to organize and access files within the file system
  2. Students will learn how to use tools such as ftp, curl, and wget for remote data access
  3. Students will use git for version control of single-author projects.
  4. Students will create, edit, and run Jupyter notebooks with simple Python scripts
